Valley of Light

KapitelChapter 06 · 6/12

Wie alles begann How It Began

She did not know, and wondered what the owl meant when it said “cliff wall” nor did she know from where the stones had come that she now, spellbound, turned in her small hand Only that they were right, she knew — somehow simply right, here with her.

“Very well, I suppose I owe it to you, though this is not my charge, yet for you, without great cost, because I like you, and you are so small, an explanation, I hope, that helps.”

“…The stones you hold are there because you, without knowing, are looking for something you do not always see, yet it is part of you — what you try to hold, so that you will not lose yourself. They bind you to your origin here.”

“But you are not from here. It is the light that led you, and you reach it only once you have walked through the dark like a whale that first dives into the deep and then swims with all its power, turns and twists, then surfaces from the water, as from a cold vault, into the saving, warming, breathable…”

“Say — where are you going? Are you even listening?!” Manouk now stood some ten metres off, along the path, and was just tearing a dandelion clock, and before the owl could stop her, biting into it

she was covered in little dandelion umbrellas, the flower between her teeth; she tried now to spit out this plant she had found on the small green meadow, with an expression on her face that did not speak well of its taste.

but Manouk only grinned with little green teeth and began to laugh sweetly, with shining blue eyes whose charm the moon-bird was simply no match for

“Very well,” said the owl after a while, “wait a moment,” took off again and flew into a great pine that stood there, dropped down with bright green needles in its beak, and landed with kernels in closed talons right at her side. “Try this. It will surely taste better.”

And indeed the pine fruit tasted good to her and at last, after hunger and such deep fear, she felt well for the first time, without pain felt strength arriving in her small heart. So strengthened they walked now, side by side, with care through the owl-moon-flooded, owlish night.
